Plan Backup Frequencies

In addition to calculating the primary frequencies for your inventory channels, Wireless Workbench can calculate backup frequencies to help your coordination run smoothly.

You can request backup frequencies automatically or set your preferences so they are found automatically when you perform a calculation. Primary frequencies (those for channels in the inventory) will always be found before backup frequencies.

Set the Calculator to Automatically Find Backup Frequencies

  1. Go to Tools > Preferences.
  2. Select the Coordination tab.
  3. Select Automatically calculate backup frequencies.

Manually Add Backup Frequencies

You can request backup frequencies for any devices, including those that are offline.

  1. Open the Frequency coordination tab
  2. Select the Add frequencies tab.
  3. Select a manufacturer, model, band, and for some devices, RF profile.
  4. Choose the quantity of backup frequencies you need.
  5. Set Add frequencies as to Backup.
  6. Select Add.
  7. Choose the lock all frequencies icon (A closed lock) to lock the frequency values that have already been coordinated.
  8. Select Calculate.
Note: Wireless Workbench will analyze all frequencies in the coordination workspace to see if their current frequencies are compatible, but only unlocked channels will receive new frequencies from the coordination.
  9. Assign and deploy the backups.
Tip: If you want a Spectrum Manager to manage the new devices, redeploy the frequency list to the Spectrum Manager. Or, add the frequencies to the compatible frequency list in the properties panel of the Spectrum Manager.

Monitor Backup Frequencies

You can monitor both in use and backup frequencies in the frequency list and, if you're using a Spectrum Manager, the properties panel of the Spectrum Manager. In the Spectrum Manager properties window, you can also switch a device to a backup frequency.
Note: You must be using a Spectrum Manager to automatically deploy backup frequencies to devices from Wireless Workbench.
  • To open the frequency list, select Frequency list on the toolbar. If you are using a Spectrum Manager, backup channels are color-coded according to their quality.
  • To open the properties panel for a Spectrum Manager, right-click the device in the inventory or monitor tabs and choose Properties.

For information about deploying backup frequencies

Switch to a Backup Frequency using a Spectrum Manager

You must be using a Spectrum Manager to automatically deploy backup frequencies to devices from Wireless Workbench.

  1. In the list, select the Spectrum Manager, then right-click and select Properties from the shortcut menu to display a list of the channels managed by this Spectrum Manager.
  2. To change a channel to one of your backup frequencies, select the channel, right-click, and select Change to this frequency from the shortcut menu. Or, drag and drop the backup channel onto the channel that you want to replace.
Note: For non-networked devices, you must change frequencies on the hardware.
